Park Forest, IL-(ENEWSPF)- The South Suburban Food Co-op, an organic and high-quality food store located in the Park Forest Plaza, has now opened its doors to all shoppers. Previously open to members only, the Co-op board recently voted to give shopping privileges to non-members as well. While membership is still encouraged, it is no longer required.
The Food Co-op, at 208 Forest Blvd., carries many items found in larger stores, with the emphasis on organic foods and household products, including local free-range eggs, fresh organic produce, organic beef and other meats, Amish-raised chicken, organic milk, nuts, beans, grains and body care. Those with specific heath problems such as gluten or lactose intolerance will find gluten and dairy-free items at the Co-op, as well as vegan and vegetarian foods.
New offerings include Amish Chicken and assorted breads from the Red Hen Bakery brought in every other week. An assortment of fresh salads and sandwiches from Dunnings’ Gourmet Market in Homewood are available on Mondays and Thursdays. Hours for the Food Co-op are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesday from 1 to 5 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Co-op is closed on Sundays.
The South Suburban Food Co-op is a non-profit organization, operated by member volunteers. Benefits to members include voting privileges, monthly discount days, and special ordering privileges. Members who work at the Co-op as cashiers, in the produce department or in other ways can earn discounts of from 5 to 25% on purchases each month. Membership can cost from $36 to as little as $12 per year.
Since its inception more than 37 years ago, it has been open to members only. Board member Karen Taylor said: “The board of directors decided it would better fulfill its mission of providing high quality, healthful food to the greater community by removing the barrier of mandatory membership. We want to welcome everyone to our store.” For more information visit the website at www.southsuburbanfoodcoop.com.
