RICHTON PARK, IL-(ENEWSPF)-May 22, 2012- Ninteen sophomores have been inducted into Southland College Prep Charter High School’s National Honor Society.
The newly elected National Honor Society members are:
Helenna Annani-Akollor, Jacole Avent, Morgan Brown, Kirsten Burke, Elijah Calloway, Jillian Dorney, Nadia Ferrer, Ashley Jackson, Asia Jenkins, Ian Katiku, Anastasia Myatt, Alexus Newson, Nneka Onyeka, Kyla Richardson, Michelle Sanders, Imani Thornton, Tiera Williams, Sarabi Woods, and Aronna Wynne.
“The induction of these inaugural members of Southland College Prep’s National Honor Society chapter is another important milestone for this new school. Our pledge to these and all Southland College Prep students is that our faculty, administration and staff, working together with parents and guardians, will provide the opportunity for our graduates to earn a degree from an accredited four-year college degree program,” said Dr. Blondean Davis, CEO.
“The Southland College Prep National Honor Society chapter is proud to join an organization founded in 1921, many of whose members have distinguished themselves as actors, ambassadors, astronauts, authors, Cabinet members, inventors, medical specialists, members of Congress, military leaders, network anchors, Olympians, Rhodes Scholars, professional athletes and many others who contribute to our country and the world,” said Dr. Davis.
According to Brian Wales, moderator of Southland College Prep’s National Honor Society chapter and an instructor in the school’s mathematics department, “these newly inducted members each have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 (out of 4.0) or above and have demonstrated to the Faculty Council who reviewed their applications and interviewed them that their participation at Southland College Prep has been marked by scholarship, leadership, character and service.”
As candidates for the National Honor Society the newly inducted members have served as volunteer tutors of their peers and assisted at Southland College Prep open houses, special events and other functions, Wales said.
About Southland College Prep Charter High School
Southland College Prep opened in August, 2010. It is the only public charter high school in Chicago’s suburbs.
For the academic year, 2011-12, 250 students are enrolled in Southland’s freshmen and sophomore classes. Over the next two years, the enrollment is scheduled to double to approximately 500 students as set by the Illinois State Board of Education.
Southland is located at 4601 West Sauk Trail Road, Richton Park, on eight acres in a three-story, 85,000 square foot, state-of-the art learning center with small class sizes, an extended nine-hour school day and a college prep curriculum which emphasizes foreign languages and the arts.
Southland’s students use 21st century classroom tools including an electronic portfolio of work and a blog for each subject area. Students engage in technology-based collaborative learning with other students, have access to video conferencing and technology assisted home-school communication to keep parents informed of progress.
Southland College Prep Charter High School serves students who reside in: Country Club Hills, Flossmoor, Hazel Crest, Homewood, Matteson, Olympia Fields, Park Forest, Richton Park and Tinley Park.
