South Suburban College Baseball Team Wins Regional Title


SOUTH HOLLAND, IL—(ENEWSPF)—May 12, 2014. South Suburban College (SSC) Baseball Team defeated Triton College by the score of 9-5 on Saturday to win the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I Region-4 Championship.  Winning pitcher Ryan Waaso, out of Marian Catholic High School, went 7 innings to get the win and improve to 7-4 on the year.  Stephen Letz, of Lake Central, had 2 hits including 3 RBI’s.  Jake Hickey, of Lincolnway East, struck the big blow with a bases clearing double in the 5th inning as the Bulldogs put up a 7-spot. 

This is the 11th time the Bulldogs have won the Regional Tournament, including four in a row.  Also for the second consecutive year, Letz was named Most Valuable Player of the Regional Tournament and Coach Ruzich was named Region-4 Coach of the Year.  

The Bulldogs will now advance to the District Tournament at Iowa Western beginning on Friday, May 16th.  South Suburban will play Marshalltown Iowa at 12:00 noon while Iowa Western will host the winner of Region-24 at 3:00 p.m.  The double elimination tournament continues through Sunday when the winner will advance to the World Series in Grand Junction Colorado.

The 2014 Bulldogs are now 36-19 on the season.  Coach Ruzich recently garnered his 1,000th career win and was selected for induction into the NJCAA Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame on May 23rd.
