University Park, IL-(ENEWSPF)- Members of Phi Alpha, the social work honors society at Governors State University, are committed to helping the community by volunteering, sponsoring fund raisers, and encouraging others to get involved.
Phi Alpha recently sponsored a roller skating party at the Glenwood Roller Rink, attended by more than 100 people, and earning more than $550 for youth programs. According to society President Nina Lee, of Glenwood, the funds raised will be donated to Operation Santa in Bourbonnais; the At Risk Youth Program sponsored by the Soul Revival Church in Chicago; and Reclaim Youth in Illinois of Glenwood.
“This year we chose to invest time in youth support activities,” said Lee. “We hope our positive involvement will help create a better future for children and our community.”
Members of the GSU Social Work Honors Society volunteer regularly, including on Thanksgiving, at various programs providing hot meals to people in need. They will also volunteer at the Chicago Cares Celebration of Service in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Saturday, January 14, 2012.
Members of the Social Work Honors Society at GSU are full and part time undergraduate students who have attained excellence in their academic program. The group promotes humanitarian goals and ideals and fosters high standards of education for social workers.
“This group is very dedicated to helping others through volunteer work and committed to their careers as social workers,” says Dr. Maristela Zell, associate professor of social work and faculty sponsor of the honors society.
