CHICAGO HEIGHTS–(ENEWSPF)–January 3, 2017. The “Small But Mighty” art exhibition opens at Prairie State College, Jan. 3, 2017, and will be on display in the Christopher Art Gallery at the main campus through Jan. 26.  An artists’ reception is scheduled from 4:30 to 7 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 12, in the gallery.

The national juried exhibition will feature winning works by Russ Revock, whose painting, “The Habits of Simulcra,” was awarded Best of Show and is featured on the exhibition postcard. Also featured is Karen Ackoff, who won an Award of Excellence for her piece, “Tlingit Whale,” Ben Tyjeski for his ceramic sculpture, “Vase AKoch d’Elephant,” and Greg Thatcher for his mixed media drawing, “Yew Trees #118.”

Aron Packer, who juried this exhibition, is a well-known gallerist in Chicago. From more than 320 works submitted by 108 artists from throughout the United States, Parker chose 34 pieces in a wide variety of media, including ceramic sculpture, photography, painting, fiber works, encaustic, drawings and prints. All submitted works could not exceed 24 inches on each side, and needed to create a big impact through content or visual elements.

With more than 20 years and 200 shows in the Chicago art scene, Packer says jurying a show is always tough.

“It’s difficult in that I love choosing from all the different works and am always happy to see a ‘yes’ vote. Inevitably, there are more no votes, and this doesn’t match up with me trying to be inclusive,” said Parker. “My taste in artwork is very broad, and in juried shows I try to include as many mediums as have been entered. I hope you enjoy what I have chosen,” he added.

The Christopher Art Gallery, located on the college’s main campus at 202 S. Halsted St. in Chicago Heights, is open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday. The gallery will be closed on Monday, January 16, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Visits also can be made by appointment.
