Professor Kevin Allred

Kevin Allred teaches gender studies at Rutgers University

According to news reports, and tweets from Kevin Allred, who is a lecturer at Rutgers University, in New Jersey where he teaches gender studies, he was taken to Bellevue Hospital in New York City for “psychiatric evaluation” by NYPD police, from his home in Greenpoint, Brooklyn NY.

The NYPD had been contacted by Rutgers Campus Police who received a report from a student that Mr. Allred was “threatening to kill white people.”

Allred is white.

I arrived at my campus (not Rutgers) for an early morning meeting and several very upset faculty members made me aware that this had happened.

Went to check his twitter stream:

Several area papers  covered the story.

Brooklyn Professor Forced Into Psych Ward for ‘Threatening’ White People on Twitter

GREENPOINT, BROOKLYN — Cops forced Rutgers University lecturer and Greenpoint resident Kevin Allred to undergo a psychiatric evaluation Tuesday at Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan, after the Rutgers University Police Department contacted the New York City Police Department (NYPD) about one of Allred’s tweets.

Allred, who is white, had said in a Nov. 10 tweet: “Will the 2nd amendment be as cool when I buy a gun and start shooting at random white people or no…?”

Allred says he was asking a rhetorical question, and that he is anti-guns.

The Daily News reports:

EXCLUSIVE: Rutgers University professor taken for psych evaluation after ‘threatening’ gun control, flag burning tweets

A Trump-bashing Rutgers University professor, deeply bothered by The Donald’s election win, insists he’s otherwise perfectly sane — no matter what campus cops say. Kevin Allred said Wednesday that he was targeted for his politics when the NYPD came to his Brooklyn home and dropped him off at the Bellevue Hospital psych ward.

“Rutgers police told them I’m a threat based on political statements I’ve made on campus and on Twitter,” Allred tweeted after the cops arrived at his home. “And this is for exercising my … First Amendment rights.

Allred was loaded into an ambulance Tuesday and taken to Bellevue for evaluation. He told the Daily News that he spent just two hours at the hospital before doctors agreed he had no psychological issues.

“The doctors were like, ‘This is ridiculous, why did they bring you here?’” Allred told The News. “And I said, ‘That’s what I thought, but they told me they had to do it.’”

You can agree or disagree with Allred’s tweets.  I find it very chilling that a lone student who may disagree with a professor’s remarks would “turn them in.”
