CHICAGO–(ENEWSPF)–Septembeer 11, 2014.  Photos taken over the last four decades by award-winning Chicago photojournalist John H. White will be on display beginning Sept. 18 at Roosevelt University’s Gage Gallery, 18 S. Michigan Ave., Chicago.

Running through Dec. 20, “Faith, Focus, Flight: A John H. White Retrospective” will feature the recognizable and award-winning photography of White, a photojournalist since 1969 for the Chicago Daily News and the Chicago Sun-Times and the winner of more than 300 professional awards, including the Pulitzer Prize in 1982.

There are 76 photos in the exhibit that opens at 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18 at Gage with a reception and presentation by White, 72, who will discuss his photography and many years in Chicago journalism.

JohnH-WhiteBernardinIconic shots of Walter Payton, Muhammed Ali, Nelson Mandela, Jessie Jackson, President Barack Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama and Archdiocese of Chicago Cardinal Joseph Bernardin are included in the exhibit, which is the first of three shows featuring Chicago photojournalism that will be presented at Gage during the 2014-15 academic year.

The photojournalism series, “Above the Fold: 10 Decades of Chicago Photojournalism,” is co-curated by Tyra Robertson, director of instructional technology and an instructor in the Communication Department at Roosevelt, and Chicago Tribune Picture Editor Michael Zajakowski.

“We are devoting an entire year to Chicago photojournalism, featuring a three-part series of everyday photos that are not only powerful, but which have served to very much shape how each of us see the world we live in,” said Robertson.

The first show, featuring White’s photographs, is particularly poignant as it brings together a lifetime of shots taken by one of Chicago’s best known and respected photojournalists who left the city’s news scene last year when the Chicago Sun-Times and its sister publications cut the entire full-time photography staff.

“As the state of media convulses and established news outlets struggle to compete with sound bites and social media chatter, one thing will remain constant:  There will always be a need for the kind of journalism practiced by experienced professionals,” said Zajakowski.

JohnHWhite Mandela“John White’s success is due not only to his great skill as a photojournalist, clearly evident in these photographs, but to his strong spiritual and emotional connection to the people in them and their stories,” he said.  “This is a chance to see what great photojournalism means, and how it bonds us to each other.”

“Faith, Focus, Flight: A John H. White Retrospective” is free and open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays.  The first in the “Above the Fold: 10 Decades of Chicago Photojournalism” series, the White exhibit will be followed by “Crime Then and Now: Through the Lens of the Chicago Tribune,” running Jan. 22 through April 11, 2015 at Gage and “Chicago Reader in Black & White,” which will be on display June 4 through Aug. 28, 2015 at Gage.
