WASHINGTON—(ENEWSPF)—May 30, 2014. The U.S. House of Representatives today passed the 2014 & 2015 Intelligence Authorization Act, which included an amendment by Congresswoman Robin Kelly aimed at preparing students at predominately black colleges and universities for careers in national security and intelligence.
Kelly’s bipartisan amendment to H.R. 4681 allows the Director of National Intelligence to provide grants to predominantly Black institutions to offer advanced foreign language education and study abroad and cultural immersion programs to increase diversity in the national security and intelligence community.
“Every day, America faces evolving threats to our national security, such as the recent threat posed by the radical group Boko Haram. In order to be effective, our national security workforce must reflect the world it engages,” Kelly said. “Because we face a diverse array of threats, our security depends on having an intelligence community that is equally diverse.”
Roughly 22 percent of the Central Intelligence Agency’s employees are minority. Kelly’s amendment will help increase the ranks of minority intelligence experts.
The 2014 & 2015 Intelligence Authorization Act, including Kelly’s amendment, passed the House and will now be considered in the Senate.
