University Park, IL –(ENEWSPF)—September 8, 2014. The 130-voice Governors State University Concert Chorale, under the direction of Albert M. Jackson, has announced their 2014 – 2015 season. The group, which operated for the past 16 seasons under the name South Suburban Chorale, recently moved to GSU.
“We are very glad and excited to be at GSU,” said Jackson. “We look forward to continuing and expanding our musical activities through the University, and want to reach out to the entire Chicago Southland area with our singing.” The Chorale has previously performed throughout the Chicago south suburban and Northwest Indiana region, and toured Europe.
Highlights of the season include the 14th annual “Christmas at St. Victor’s” concert in Calumet City in December, the Chorale’s Gala debut concert at the 1170-seat Center for Performing Arts at Governors State University in January of 2015, and the Haydn “Lord Nelson” Mass with the Lakeshore Symphony Orchestra in Calumet City in May of 2015.
The GSU Concert Chorale 2014-2015 Season
“Past and Future” – October 12 and 26, 2014; 4 p.m.
The chorale continues its tradition of musical excellence with a program entitled “Past and Future,” featuring audience favorites from the Chorale’s past seasons, as well as new literature in celebration of the group’s new name. Works by Beethoven, Vierne, Copland, and Randall Thompson, as well as folksong arrangements and spirituals will be presented. The October 12 concert takes place at St. Lawrence O’Toole Catholic Church, 4101 St Lawrence Ave, Matteson, IL and the October 26 concert takes place at First Methodist Church, 103 Franklin St, Valparaiso, IN. The concerts are free. Donations are gratefully accepted.
“Christmas at St. Victor’s” – December 7, 2014; 4 p.m.
The Chorale’s 14th annual Christmas concert takes place in the sanctuary of St. Victor’s Catholic Church, 553 Hirsch Ave. in Calumet City, on December 7 at 4 p.m. The program includes seasonal music with organ and orchestra by Bach, Handel, Rutter, Willcocks and others. The audience is invited to participate in sing-along carols. The concert is free of charge. Donations are gratefully accepted. Early seating is highly recommended.
“Presenting the GSU Concert Chorale – The Gala Concert” – January 18, 2015; 4 p.m.
Marking the “official” debut of the Governors State University Chorale under the direction of Albert M. Jackson, the GSU Center for Performing Arts and the School of Extended Learning present a gala concert featuring works heard in the fall concerts and new materials prepared for the occasion, including works celebrating the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. General seating tickets are $20. “Troubles and Triumphs” – May 3, 2015; 4 p.m.
Accompanied by the Lakeshore Symphony Orchestra, the Chorale will present a concert of the music of Haydn and Mozart, including the great “Lord Nelson” mass of Joseph Haydn, also known as the “Mass in Troubled Times,” written to commemorate the British victory over Napoleon in 1798. The concert takes place at the magnificent sanctuary of St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church, 768 Lincoln Ave., Calumet City. The concert is free. Donations are gratefully accepted. Early seating is highly recommended.
