As Students Challenge Voting Restrictions in Court, Brennan Center Guide Helps Students Navigate New Requirements, Understand Rules
NEW YORK–(ENEWSPF)–September 11, 2014. As Americans face an ever-shifting voting landscape before heading to the polls this November, the Brennan Center for Justice at NYU Law School released an interactive Student Voting Guide to help young people navigate new rules and find out how to register and vote in their state.
The 2014 guide provides an updated, comprehensive review of voting regulations in all 50 states, including registration deadlines, residency requirements, identification policies, absentee voting rules, and early voting information. It will help students — who are particularly vulnerable to rules changes because they often attend school out of state and change addresses frequently — get to the polls and cast ballots that count.
“Students across the country are bravely taking to the courts to challenge laws restricting their voting rights,” said Tomas Lopez, Counsel in the Brennan Center’s Democracy Program. “As they fight to overturn those laws, the Brennan Center’s Student Voting Guide will help them navigate the labyrinth of voting requirements that currently exist, so they can have an impact on Election Day and a say in the future of our country.”
The voting landscape has changed dramatically in recent years. Since 2010, new restrictions are slated to be in place for the November election in 22 states — 15 of them for the first time this year. With the midterm elections less than two months away, there are still seven states with major, ongoing lawsuits challenging voting restrictions.
