RICHTON PARK, IL.—(ENEWSPF)–February 6, 2017—Marian Catholic High School, the Chicago Heights, Illinois speech powerhouse, won first place in the Illinois High School Association’s Regional Individual Speech Event tournament for 12 Chicago southwest suburban area high schools hosted by Southland College Prep Charter High School, Richton Park, Saturday, February 4.
Marian Catholic placed first in seven of the fourteen individual events to lead the twelve school field with 73 points. Homewood-Flossmoor High School took second place with 61.5 points and Southland College Prep Charter High School placed third with 46.5 points.
Joliet Central and Joliet West tied for fourth place with 38 points each.
Other teams competing in the Regional Speech tournament were: Hillcrest, Lincoln-Way Central, Lincoln-Way East, Lincoln-Way West, Rich East, Rich South and Thornton Fractional South.
Southland College Prep placed first in the “Performance-in-the-Round” category.
A nine-member cast and three student directors staged “Anansi, the Spider,” a folk tale about a spider-god, Anansi, originated in Ghana by the Ashanti people. The Anansi tales were recounted orally from generation to generation and spread all through West Africa.
Marian Catholic, Homewood- Flossmoor and Joliet West placed second, third and fourth in the PIR category.
“This day-long competition, led by Cheryl Frazier, Southland’s Director of Forensics and Theatre, who served as tournament manager, was an exhibition of extraordinary talent, spirit, and professionalism by all the competitors,” said Dr. Blondean Davis, Southland College Prep’s CEO.
“Coaches, judges and faculty were impressed by the wonderful spirit of good sportsmanship that prevailed in our classrooms and performance spaces during a very long 10-hour competition,” she added.
