Illinois Students Compete for Scholarship Dollars at Financial Literacy Bowl

Chicago, IL –(ENEWSPF)—March 5, 2014. More than 120 Illinois high school students will test their knowledge of personal finance and compete for scholarship prizes at the third annual Financial Literacy Bowl, hosted by the Illinois College Advising Corps (ICAC).

During the one-day tournament, teams of six seniors from 22 ICAC’s partner high schools will play against one another, and each member from the first through fourth place teams will receive a scholarship. Students will be tested on topics ranging from college costs to types of financial aid and real-world financial management issues such as credit basics. Teams are coached by the ICAC college advisers at their respective high schools.

The competition will be held on March 14 between 9:00 am and 3:30 pm at Student Center West on the campus of the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Organized by the University of Illinois in partnership with the National College Advising Corps, the Illinois College Advising Corps places recent University of Illinois graduates in high-need high schools to help students learn about and prepare for college. As part of college preparedness, ICAC advisers facilitate financial literacy workshops designed to teach money management skills and knowledge critical to a successful financial future.

Launched in 2011, the Financial Literacy Bowl helps ICAC Advisers get their students excited and engaged around financial literacy topics. The competitive atmosphere and the chance for scholarship dollars provide extra motivation for students to brush up on their knowledge

“Now, more than ever, financial literacy is a vital component of a student’s success in college enrollment and completion,” said Judith Flink, founder of ICAC and executive director of University of Illinois student Financial Services. “By involving these students in workshops and events that stress the importance of financial awareness, we are providing them with invaluable tools for the future.”
