“Our events are designed to help people discover their inner strengths and nurture their emotional health,” said Tamekia Scott, Outreach Counselor at GSU’s Academic Resource Center (ARC). “We want the public to know conditions like depression and anxiety are highly treatable and that people with these illnesses can lead productive, fulfilling lives.”

Activities during the week include “Fight or Flight,” a workshop on stress management, on October 3, from noon to 1 p.m. and again from 5 to 6 p.m., in the Center for Performing Arts lobby.

Achieving inner wellness is the topic of “Revealing Me to Me,” a presentation on October 4, from noon to 1 p.m. and again from 5 to 6 p.m., in the Center for Performing Arts lobby.

“Discovering Self,” on October 5, investigates self-empowerment from noon to 1 p.m. and again from 5 to 6 p.m., in the Center for Performing Arts lobby.

On October 6, information on depression and related concerns will be available from noon to 5 p.m., in the Hall of Governors. Confidential depression screening will be offered in the Academic Resource Center (ARC), adjacent to the Hall of Governors. Depression screening involves completing a brief questionnaire and a conversation with a mental health professional. Questionnaire results are anonymous and confidential. If warranted, the mental health professional will offer next-step suggestions.

ARC is sponsoring Mental Health Awareness Week activities. The center provides ongoing counseling services to GSU students. The Counseling Lab at Governors State University provides free, confidential services to adults, couples, and families.
