2016 Governors State University’s Community Garden Plots Now Available

University Park, IL –(ENEWSPF)–May 3, 2016.   Gather up all your gardening tools and put them to good use in a plot at the University Sustainable Garden hosted by Governors State University.

The sustainable garden gives the university community and area residents a chance to use organic methods to grow vegetables of their choice.

“GSU is proud to welcome gardeners to our community garden again this spring. This is an opportunity for them to grow healthy, organic food for their families,” said Kevin Barto, Director of Campus Facilities Services for GSU’s Department of Facilities Development and Management. “We expect to have a mix of experienced and first-time gardeners, working together to produce healthy food. This also gives individuals a chance to interact and learn from each other.”

The University Sustainable Garden, located on campus, east of GSU’s Family Development Center, features 64 garden plots of various sizes. Plots range from 35 square feet for beginners to 400 square feet for experienced gardeners. The GSU site is fully enclosed to keep out unwanted visitors such as rabbits and deer.  The university also provides water to the University Sustainable Garden via three yard hydrants between the plots. Gardeners must bring their own tools, plants and/or seeds, and must agree to follow guidelines specified by the garden rules. Gardeners seeking growing assistance will be directed to resources from the University of Illinois Extension Service, American Community Garden Association, and other organizations.

To be eligible for a garden plot, gardeners pay a nominal fee, from $10 to $25 depending on plot size, and agree to follow the rules and policies of the community garden. The registration deadline is June 15. Garden plots are available on a first come, first served basis. The University Sustainable Garden will be open from dawn to dusk from May through October.
