2014 Earth Week Activities Scheduled at Prairie State College

CHICAGO HEIGHTS—(ENEWSPF)–April 16, 2014. Prairie State College (PSC) is celebrating Earth Week from Monday, April 21, through Saturday, April 26. There are several exciting events scheduled during the week that are intended to help PSC students, faculty, and staff, as well as the PSC community, understand about pressures on the global and local environment, increase awareness of and educate for the green economy, and address social issues in our community to ensure a quality of life for future generations that is greater than the present.

There are events scheduled each day of the week, beginning Monday, and a full list of events scheduled is available at prairiestate.edu/sustainability. All events will be held on the college main campus, located at 202 S. Halsted St. in Chicago Heights.

The week’s events are sponsored by Emerald Sponsors the Sustainable Business Center and UPS, Jungle Sponsor UsAgain, and Forest Sponsors SouthStar Services, Magic Pure, Chiro One Wellness Centers, and Barnes & Noble Bookstore.

Among the highlighted events are a Wednesday, April 23 Green Vendor Fair, sponsored by the Sustainability Center and Cook County Department of Environmental Control. “This is our second annual green vendor fair, and I am really excited to see how this program has grown. Many of our vendors are returning for a second year, but we also have quite a few new vendors this year,” said Allessandra Cairo, sustainability coordinator at PSC.

“These great companies will be offering green products and services as well as career, volunteer, and internship opportunities for our students, faculty, and staff, and, of course, it is open to the public, which is an added bonus,” she said.

Thursday, April 24, the Student Government Association is sponsoring “Conservation Through Education,” featuring representatives from Settler’s Pond Animal and Rescue Shelter in Beecher, who will conduct an interactive demonstration, highlighting some of their animals to discuss conservation.

The week closes with a Protégé sponsored event, “Real Men Recycle: Community Recycling Drive,” from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, April 26. A full list of items being accepted is available at www.prairiestate.edu/sustainability.
