Representative Jan Schakowsky Statement On Supreme Court Ruling On Abortion Access

CHICAGO–(ENEWSPF)–June 27, 2016.  Representative Jan Schakowsky released the following after the Supreme Court ruled in favor of a woman’s right to choose:

“Today’s decision is an important victory for women, and I am relieved that one of the most harmful attacks on women’s health has been overturned.  The decision today affirms what many of us already knew, that the restrictive anti-abortion law in Texas was unconstitutional and dangerous to women’s health.”

“There is no question that the Texas law was part of a concerted attack in the states, courts, and in Congress to take us back to the days when women did not have autonomy over their bodies or their lives.  By restricting access to abortion services through unnecessary and burdensome regulations, the Texas law sought to take away women’s Constitutionally-protected rights to make their own personal decisions.  Today’s decision prevents that.”

“This has always been about undoing Roe v. Wade, a ruling that didn’t start abortions but prevented women from dying from abortions.  This was never about protecting women’s health, which is exactly why the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the American Medical Association and other medical groups weighed in to oppose the Texas law, saying it ignored medical evidence and jeopardized the health of women.”

“While this ruling is a victory, we know that the fight for reproductive rights is far from over. Those who seek to restrict women’s health by undermining access to abortion, defunding Planned Parenthood, or prevent critical medical research will continue their destructive attacks. We must remain vigilant and keep up the fight for women and their reproductive rights.”
