Washington, DC—(ENEWSPF)–July 10, 2013) – Rep. Jan Schakowsky spoke on her amendment to the House Energy and Water Appropriation Bill:
Today, the House passed the Higgins-Collins-Lipinski-Schakowsky amendment to prevent the Army Corps of Engineers from closing the Chicago District office. The downsizing could cost more than 200 Army Corps jobs in Chicago. Chicago is the point of entry from the Mississippi River to the Great Lakes, and its harbors are of major economic importance not just to the Chicago area, but to the entire Great Lakes region. The Army Corps provides dredging for those harbors and assists in the rehabilitation of the Chicago shoreline. It also leads the fight against the spread of Asian Carp in to Lake Michigan.
