Rep. Jan Schakowsky Statement on President Obama’s Executive Actions on Gun Safety

Washington, DC–(ENEWSPF)–January 5, 2016.  Today, Rep. Jan Schakowsky issued the following statement in response to President Obama’s executive actions to address the gun violence epidemic in America:

“I thank the President for stepping up and taking action where the Republican Congress has repeatedly refused to do so. Gun violence kills 88 Americans every day. In Chicago last year, almost 3,000 people were the victims of gun violence.

“The President’s executive orders will enable better enforcement of the laws we already have. They will expand the existing requirement that anyone engaged in the business of selling a firearm get a license and conduct background checks; improve the efficiency of and the information in the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS); and focus efforts to reduce illegal gun trafficking. Americans have waited long enough for meaningful action – and the executive actions announced today are a significant step in the right direction.

“While I am thankful that the President has taken action on this issue, Congress is not off the hook. I urge Speaker Ryan and the House leadership to bring commonsense gun violence prevention measures supported by the majority of Americans up for a vote now. We should act to prevent gun violence, not sit on the sidelines while our communities are ravaged and our people are dying.”
