Rep. Jan Schakowsky Statement On Planned Parenthood Lawsuit

Washington, DC–(ENEWSPF)–Januarty 14, 2016.  Today, Rep. Jan Schakowsky released the following statement after Planned Parenthood announced that it would be filing a lawsuit against those who tried to spread lies about the organization’s activities:

“I fully support Planned Parenthood’s decision to file suit against the Center for Medical Progress (CMP) and individuals associated with it. I share the concern that CMP’s activities may have violated state and federal laws, and last July I asked both the U.S. Attorney General and the California Attorney General to consider the matter and as a result, the California Attorney General indicated that she would look into it.

“Republican lawmakers have seized on the doctored, manufactured videotapes to justify votes to defund Planned Parenthood and to launch a series of Congressional and state investigations – not into the actions of the CMP but into a respected provider of health care to over 3 million Americans. None of those investigations uncovered any wrongdoing on the part of Planned Parenthood, and even Oversight and Government Reform Chairman Jason Chaffetz has stated that ‘I’m not suggesting that they broke the law.’ Without any evidence of wrongdoing on Planned Parenthood’s part, House Republicans have created a new Select Investigative Panel to spend more taxpayer dollars to continue their attack on women’s health and health care providers like Planned Parenthood.

“As Ranking Member of the Select Panel, I will also work to put the focus where it deserves to be: on protecting American women and ensuring their access to health care, including their right to the full range of critical reproductive health care services.”
