Rep. Jan Schakowsky Statement On Latest Efforts to Attack Women’s Healthcare

WASHINGTON, DC –(ENEWSPF)—October 23, 2015. Today, Rep. Jan Schakowsky (IL-09) released the following statement after voting against the latest effort to repeal or undermine the Affordable Care Act and attack women’s health:

“Yet again, House Republicans are attacking women’s health and trying to take away affordable health care from millions of Americans. Today’s vote marked the 61st time House Republicans have voted to repeal or undermine the Affordable Care Act and amazingly, in the same bill, they also defunded Planned Parenthood, a trusted provider of women’s health services for over 99 years.

“Not only does this bill strip away affordable health care from nearly 18 million Americans newly-insured under the Affordable Care Act, it would take away guarantees that are especially important to women: access to free preventive services like contraception as well as breast and cervical cancer screenings, a ban on gender-rating that increased health insurance premiums to women just because they are women, and mandatory coverage of maternity and well-baby care.

“This dangerous, anti-woman bill also seeks to end access to abortion. The Republican majority’s continued efforts to defund Planned Parenthood, despite the fact that there is not a shred of evidence that Planned Parenthood has broken any laws, is truly an attempt to undermine a women’s right to make her own health care decisions.

“Instead of engineering another assault on women’s health and their right to choose, Congress should pass a responsible government funding bill that removes the looming threat of a government shutdown.”
