Rep. Jan Schakowsky Statement on Energy and Commerce Committee Review of Planned Parenthood and Center for Medical Progress

Washington, DC –-(ENEWSPF)–September 9, 2015.

“Today, the Energy and Commerce Committee Democrats announced that the ongoing investigation into Planned Parenthood has shown what we already know – that Planned Parenthood did not break any laws and continues to provide excellent health care to millions of woman across the country.   Over the past few months, the Committee has painstakingly conducted interviews and held bipartisan briefings, all of which have shown that there is no evidence of any wrongdoing by Planned Parenthood.

However, there is evidence that the Center for Medical Progress may have broken the law by recording and releasing videos without consent, filing fraudulent tax documents, and using a fake driver’s license to gain access to Planned Parenthood facilities.  Earlier this summer, I sent a letter to the Department of Justice and the California Attorney General asking them to investigate the Center for Medical Progress.  The California Attorney General has begun an investigation and the Department of Justice is currently reviewing all the materials they’ve received.

Congress should not have to waste any more time, resources and taxpayer dollars on this witch hunt.  Our Committee should be focusing on real priorities – improving health care, combating climate change, creating jobs and making products safer – not attacking Planned Parenthood and undermining women’s access to critical services.  The investigations that the Republican majority has instigated, as well as the threat by some Republicans to shut down the government over Planned Parenthood funding, are a continuation of the attack on women’s health and reproductive freedom.  I will continue to work to maintain Planned Parenthood’s ability to provide excellent health care to millions of women.”
