Rep. Jan Schakowsky: ‘Over Forty Years After The Roe v. Wade Decision, The Fight for Women’s Reproductive Rights Continues’

Washington, DC–(ENEWSPF)–January 22, 2016.  Today, Representative Jan Schakowsky released the following statement on the anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision:

“Over forty years ago, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a decisive ruling of 7-2 in favor of women’s health and reproductive rights. This seminal Roe v. Wade ruling brought abortions out of the shadows and gave women control over their bodies, their health and their own economic opportunity. This decision didn’t mark the start of abortions, but it did mark the end of women dying from them.

“While this important ruling helped lead to the advancement of women, the attacks on women and their reproductive rights continue. This Republican-controlled-Congress has voted eleven times to attack women’s health, has voted five times to defund Planned Parenthood and has voted to create a new Select Investigative Panel to attack women’s health. These continued attacks highlight all that is at stake and the advances that many are seeking to overturn.

“This is why we must continue the fight for women’s health and reproductive rights. As the Ranking Member on the Republican Select Investigative Panel to Attack Women’s Health, I will continue to stand up for women and fight back against these unfounded attacks. These outrageous Republican attacks not just on abortion but on family planning and comprehensive sex education will not succeed. Women across the country are watching, they don’t like what they see, and they won’t soon forget.”
