PSC To Hold Free Jazz Concert

Chicago Heights , IL—(ENEWSPF)—Jazz lovers can enjoy a free concert featuring the Prairie State College (PSC) Extreme Big Band and PSC Jazz Pioneers Combo. The concert will be held Monday, June 30, at 7:30 p.m. , in the auditorium located on the main campus, 202 S. Halsted St. , Chicago Heights . The concert is free and open to the public.

The members of both ensembles are composed of student and professional musicians and educators from the south suburbs. The PSC Jazz Pioneers Combo will perform standard tunes such as “All Blues” by Miles Davis, plus a “super sax” arrangement of “Blue and Boogie.”

“It is a dream come true for us to have students playing next to seasoned professionals and teachers who love to share their ideas and talents with each other,” said Philip Crews, director of the PSC Wind Ensemble. “It’s a wonderful, symbiotic mentorship program.”

The Extreme Big Band will perform a world premier by Darrel Dalton, a published composer and one of the trumpet players in the band. His tune, titled “Nestico – Straight Ahead,” is in the Basie tradition and is a tribute to the great composer/arranger for that band, Sam Nestico.

“It’s a thrill for me and the rest of the musicians to get to perform a new work, particularly in the presence of the composer,” said Valerie Nicholson, director of the Extreme Big Band and PSC Jazz Pioneers Combo.
