Springfield, IL-(ENEWSPF)- Tuesday, the Illinois State Legislature approved a measure to ban assault weapons. Governor J.B. Pritzker, wasting no time, signed the bill immediately.

Congresswoman Robin Kelly, who fought for years for such a ban in Illinois and continues the fight nationally in Congress, issued the following statement:

“I am deeply grateful that my home state of Illinois has taken this critical step toward making our communities safe for everyone.  Allowing assault weapons to persist on our streets is antithetical to our most deeply held values. Everyone has the right to feel safe in their homes and their communities. Assault weapons do not only cause harm when they grab headline news for mass shootings. Too often, a beloved son or daughter or mother or father is taken away from their family because of these weapons of war,” said Rep. Robin Kelly (IL-02). “The people of Illinois will be better off because of this legislation.  I especially want to thank my friend, Representative Bob Morgan, who sponsored this legislation and was a tireless advocate for its passage. As we celebrate this historic victory, I am reminded of how much more we can accomplish in Congress to address the public health crisis of gun violence. Addressing practices like interstate gun trafficking will prevent guns from states with fewer safeguards on gun ownership from illegally coming into Illinois. This must be done at the federal level, and I will continue to work hard in Congress to make this policy a reality.”

Kelly is a proud recipient of an “F” rating from the National Rifle Association.
