CHICAGO—(ENEWSPF)—June 12, 2018

In just the latest addition to the Trump administration’s mounting collection of “cruel” policies aimed at closing off the nation to refugees and asylum-seekers, Attorney General Jeff Sessions released a new Justice Department guidance yesterday declaring that migrants will no longer automatically qualify for asylum if they present concerns of domestic abuse or gang violence.
Mayor Emanuel issued the following statement:
“It is unconscionable that under the Trump administration this nation is turning its back on vulnerable women and children seeking shelter from abusive relationships. Those fleeing dangerous circumstances deserve our compassion and support as they make difficult life and death decisions. While Washington turns its back on immigrants and victims of domestic violence, Chicago will continue to find new ways to open our doors and expand our resources for survivors.”
