South Suburban Resident Receives 2016 Hero of the Year Award

Chicago-(ENEWSPF)- South Suburban Resident Dr. Michael M. Townsend Sr. receives The Salvation Army Ray & Joan Kroc Center’s Community Hero of the Year Award. At its recent June 9th 2016 Annual Event, Townsend, along with colleague Merle Shepera, CDE, were honored to receive this Award for their outstanding community health initiative work in the Chicagoland communities, training and educating senior citizens on how to manage their diabetes conditions. “Townsend, Senior Quality Improvement Facilitator and Community Outreach Lead for Telligen Healthcare Intelligence mentioned that it’s an honor to be recognized for this community effort.”

Since last year the Salvation Army Kroc Center has allowed Telligen to provide community residents with weekly diabetes education and self-management classes.

Townsend stated, “Diabetes is a major disease that devastates many individuals especially African Americans and Hispanics. Our company is commissioned under the Center for Medicare and Medicaid to provide Free Diabetes Self-Management Education (DSME) an evidence-based intervention method that strengthens the knowledge and skills of people with diabetes conditions” We help improve their lives, give hope and improve their quality of life” “Townsend also stated that he and Ms. Shepra have conducted Diabetes training programs with partnering Senior Citizen Programs such as: Rich Township, Thornton Township, and numerous senior residential centers in the area.

The Chicago Salvation Army Ray & Joan Kroc Community Center is a non-profit organization that changes lives and bring hope to many community residents from youth to seniors.
