Rep. Jan Schakowsky Votes for Government Funding Bill

Washington, DC–(ENEWSPF)–December 18, 2015.  Today, Rep. Jan Schakowsky issued the following statement after voting for legislation to fund the government:

“I supported the compromise Omnibus funding bill that prevented another disastrous government shut-down, a bill that had some important achievements as well as some provisions that I strongly oppose.

“Thanks to the skill and determination of Nancy Pelosi, virtually all of the destructive policy riders Republicans longed for were stopped. The National Journal reported, “Pelosi forced (Speaker Ryan) to negotiate on her terms.” Ryan “admitted profusely that he walked away with less than he would have liked.” On the failed Republican wish list were destructive provisions that would have defunded Planned Parenthood; barred Syrian and Iraqi refugees from entering the United States; weakened financial regulations; let financial advisers provide information that is not in the best interests of their clients; allowed big corporations to use unfair labor practices; weakened consumer protections; eliminated clean air, water, land and climate protections; and ended candidate contribution limits. In November, Representative Ruben Gallego and I sent a letter – signed by over 160 of our colleagues — opposing those riders. I am pleased that our Democratic Leadership was able to prevent them from being in the bill.

“The bill included an additional $33 billion for important domestic spending priorities that will go to help seniors, medical research, education, mental health, job training, 9/11 first responders, and more.

“While I am deeply disappointed that the bill ends the ban on the exportation of crude oil from the United States, I am pleased that the wind and solar tax credits in the Omnibus will eliminate about ten times more carbon pollution than the exports of oil will add.”
