Washington, DC–(ENEWSPF)–February 4, 2016. Yesterday, Representative Jan Schakowsky released the following statement after voting against legislation that would undermine key components of the Iran nuclear agreement:
“The Iran deal is working to prevent Iran from producing nuclear weapons. Yet, instead of letting that progress continue, the Republican majority is trying to undo it, passing legislation that would violate the key commitments our country made in the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) agreement and allow Iran to renege its concessions. Those key concessions include: dismantling 13,000 centrifuges, shipping almost all of its stockpile out of the country, rendering its Arak reactor inoperable, and complying with intrusive inspections. We must not, however, allow Iran to use the JCPOA as a cover for bad behavior in other areas such as support for terrorist organizations or interference in the internal affairs of its neighbors – and we aren’t. The United States is still enforcing all the many non-nuclear sanctions against Iran and promises to be stringent in enforcing all provisions of the deal. This agreement is already leading to progress. Let’s not listen to the same voices who have called for war at every turn and who now insist that this bill must be passed. This is not the time to turn back the clock. We must continue to allow this agreement and our commitment to diplomacy the time to work.”
