Park Forest Remembers Dewey Helmik


Park Forest, IL–(ENEWSPF)– Village officials in Park Forest released the following statement on the death of former trustee Dewey Helmick:

The Village wishes to express condolences to the family and friends of former trustee Dewey Helmick, who passed away September 26th, 2009.

A veteran of World War II, Dewey graduated from West Virginia University in 1951.

Following college, Dewey went on to make substantial contributions to his work at the Chicago Daily News, the Chicago Sun-Times and Rich Township; to his community, serving as a Park Forest trustee for three terms from 1972-1977, and to the greater Southland region; playing an instrumental role in the planning of the Old Plank Trail.

A 12.83 acre nature preserve between Central Avenue and Ridgeland Avenue is named in his honor.

Dewy Helmick was inducted into the Park Forest Historical Society’s Hall of Fame in 1994.

A memorial service is planned for Saturday, October 31st at 10:30 am at Faith Protestant Church, located at 10 Hemlock Street in Park Forest.
