To be eligible for the Hall of Fame, persons nominated must have made substantial, beneficial and consistent contributions to the life and well-being of Park Forest over a considerable span of time. The 2013 induction ceremony will take place in the Spring. For additional details about the Hall of Fame nominations, see the ‘This & That’ section.

Step Back into a 1950s Christmas at the Park Forest House Museum

‘Step Back into a 1950s Christmas,’ exhibit will be on display at the 1950s Park Forest House Museum, 141 Forest Boulevard. Period decorations are on display in every room. Take a break from the hustle and bustle of 21st century holidays to revisit the holidays of your past in this gem of a museum, just down the street. TCAS Christmas Cards on Sale

Once again the TCAS will be offering original Christmas cards in a variety of designs.   • Monday, December 10 at 10:30 a.m. – Imagine! Create! Participate! This program is designed for children ages 3-5 and will include not only a story, but the use of their imaginations. Park Forest Plaza Print for Sale

Annabelle Gould’s print of the Park Forest Plaza is available for sale at the Park Forest House Museum, 141 Forest Boulevard. The vibrant print is from an original watercolor, showing kids and their moms in the Park Forest Plaza, in front of the old Holiday Theatre and Golden Hanger Shop. The print can be purchased at the House Museum during normal hours of operation on Wednesdays and Saturdays or through the Society’s online store on their website at www.parkforesthistory.org. In light of the ongoing war in Afghanistan and the rising need for mental health care for returning veterans, the National Veterans Art Museum (NVAM) is proud to hold its third annual IN WAR series in its new location at 4041 N. Milwaukee Avenue in Chicago. The third annual INWAR series examines intergenerational trauma: the passing of mass traumas from one generation to the next. Meeting on Campaign Finance Reform – Wednesday, December 12

On Wednesday, December 12 at 7 p.m., the League of Women Voters of the Park Forest Area will host an educational meeting on the topic of Campaign Finance Reform at the Park Forest Public Library, 400 Lakewood Boulevard. Paula Lawson, Campaign Finance Reform Issue Specialist for the League of Women Voters of Illinois will provide an update on the status of Campaign Finance Reform at the state and federal levels, with a focus on the impact of the Citizens United Supreme Court ruling that allowed unlimited political contributions from corporations. The meeting is open to the public and anyone interested in the topic is encouraged to attend to learn more about this important issue. The Literacy Zone Reading Tutoring Available at GSU

GSU’s Graduate Program in Reading is sponsoring The Literacy Zone, a reading tutorial program for students in grades six through twelve, on Tuesday, from January 29 through April 23 from 4:45 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. The Literacy Zone is a 12-week, one-to-one program that pairs students experiencing reading problems with teachers who have the skills to help them. Students meet on the GSU campus with certified, experienced teachers enrolled in the Master of Arts Reading Program at GSU. Enrollment is limited and based on the number of tutors available. Students will be accepted in the order in which the completed application and registration fee are received. There is a $70 registration fee, which may be adjustable. New Classes Take Center Stage at GSU

GSU is offering two new and exciting classes that take students out of the books and onto the stage. “Performing Culture and Identity: and “Chicagoland Theatre” are open to both undergraduate and graduate students as well as degree and non-degree seeking students. Classes begin in January. Students in “Chicagoland Theatre” will experience the great theatre produced throughout the Chicago region—attending productions at GSU’s Center for Performing Arts and at theatres in downtown Chicago. Productions will feature a variety of performance styles and themes. This course literally raises the curtain on theatre production and performance. The class meets on Thursdays from 7:30 p.m. to 10:20 p.m. In “Performing Culture and Identity,” students will investigate diverse perspectives of culture and identify through the theories and practices of performance. Participants must be willing to tap into their creativity, curiosity, and willingness to perform. The class meets on Mondays from 4:30 p.m. to 7:20 p.m. Registration for classes continues through January 26. The Spring 2013 semester begins January 22. Veterans Writing Groups at GSU

GSU is inviting veterans to join a new Veterans Writing Group, where they will discover the craft of narrative writing in a small, supportive group environment. Groups will meet for six-week workshops beginning in January to learn new skills and share camaraderie with other vets. There is no charge for participation in the Veterans Writing Group. Job Search Assistance Every Tuesday at GSU

The Mobile Workforce Center’s mobile unit will be at GSU every Tuesday, from 9:30 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., parked near the university’s front entrance. Center services include resume development, access to online job boards and websites, instruction in how to conduct an online job search and improve keyboarding skills, and assistance of staff. The center is equipped with 11 computer stations with Internet access, printer, and copy machines, and is wheelchair accessible. Services are free and available to residents in all counties. You can bridge the gap between technology and a new you at PSC’s new Opt In program that consists of two computer training centers and free classes to teach basic technological skills. One location is at the Adult Training and outreach Center in Room A145 at PSC’s main campus. Hours are Monday through Thursday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. The other location is at the Matteson Area Center’s Computer Training Lab located at 4821 Southwick Dr., Matteson. ‘Cool Cities’ Program – Monday, December 10

The Sauk-Calumet Group of the Illinois Sierra Club will hold its monthly meeting on Monday, December 10 at 7:15 p.m. at the Olympia Fields Village Hall, 20701 Governor’s Highway. The old Village Hall is on the corner of Governor’s Highway and 207th Street – enter from 207th Street. The ‘Cool Cities’ program is an update on community efforts to manage climate change. We will look at what’s happening with the U.S. Mayors’ Climate Protection Agreement and the nine cities in our group’s area that have been working on becoming more energy efficient. Sierra Club meetings are free and open to the public. GSU’s Psychology Department is offering free psychotherapy services to members of the community. Conversations with a psychotherapist can help people cope with depression, anxiety, relationship issues, stress, and life transition problems. Confidential, one-on-one sessions are held with a GSU graduate student in psychology under the supervision of a Licensed Clinical Psychologist. Senior citizens of all income levels are invited to lunch weekdays at the Community Nutrition Network (CNN) site located inside the Rich Township’s Shirley J. Green Senior Center. Park Forest Hall of Fame Nominations Being Accepted Through December 15

The Park Forest Historical Society will be accepting nominations for the Park Forest Hall of Fame until December 15, 2012. The official form, which must accompany the nomination, is available at the Park Forest Public Library, 400 Lakewood Boulevard, the 1950s Park Forest House Museum, 141 Forest Boulevard on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., the lobby of Park Forest Village Hall, 350 Victory Drive, the Archive Office, 227 Monee Road on Fridays from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, or on the Society’s website, www.parkforesthistory.org. Nominations may be mailed to the Historical Society or turned in at the Library in person.

To be eligible for the Hall of Fame, persons nominated must have made substantial, beneficial and consistent contributions to the life and well-being of Park Forest over a considerable span of time. Nominees may now live elsewhere, or be deceased. Individuals or couples may be nominated. The person making the nomination does not have to live in Park Forest, and does not have to be a member of the society. Inductees will be chosen from among the eligible nominees by the Park Forest Historical Society, and announced early in 2013. The induction ceremony will be held at Freedom Hall on April 14, 2013. Good As New Thrift Store – Seeking Donations

The Sertoma Centre’s Good As New Thrift Store, 4331 Lincoln Highway, Matteson, is seeking donations of gently used furniture and other household items in good condition. Proceeds from the sale of items at the Thrift Store go directly to supporting the 14 programs offered by Sertoma Centre. The store also serves as a training program for consumers at Sertoma to allow them to gain experience and transition into permanent retail jobs. The Thrift Store will pick up furniture donations within the south and southwest suburbs of Chicago free of charge. Donate Unused Air Miles to Support Families of Wounded Servicemembers

"Operation Hero Miles" collects unused frequent flyer miles to help military families visit service members who were injured in Iraq or Afghanistan and are recovering in military hospitals around the world. The Village of Park Forest is currently seeking the names and addresses of local military personnel currently serving overseas so that they may receive packaged donations from Park Forest residents. South Suburban Family Shelter Used Cell Phone Collection Drive

South Suburban Family Shelter (SSFS) is seeking cell phone donations for their ongoing fundraising program. Proceeds from the collection fund the critical programs and services provided to families who experience domestic violence. All victim services are provided free of charge and are available in English and Spanish. Cell phone collection sites currently include:

Safe Disposal Program – Bio-waste

The Park Forest Health Department and Environment Commission have partnered to provide information on the proper disposal of bio-waste such as used syringes or lancets (medical sharps). Begin by purchasing a Sharps container to dispose of your medical sharps for $10 at the Park Forest Health Department. Return the filled container to the Park Forest Health Department and purchase a new container. Call Brenda Walker at 708-748-1118 for more information.

Recycle Used Cell Phones and Cell Phone Accessories

The Rotary Club of Park Forest is conducting a used cell phone and accessory collection drive to benefit the families and programs of the South Suburban Family Shelter.
