Chicago–(ENEWSPF)–April 3, 2017 – Jessica Disu aka FM Supreme and the Chicago International Youth Peace Movement (CIYPM) announce today the official relaunch of the HerStory: My Sisters’ Keeper program for young women and girls. This program will focus on inspiring, educating and empowering young women of color through creative writing, spoken word, hip hop, theater/acting, peace circles and peace talk workshops on Chicago’s South Side. Our goal is to help young women develop & harness leadership skills & artistic talents to promote peace, nonviolence and storytelling.
The My Sisters’ Keeper initiative will serve young women of color between the ages of 17 and 27, develop leadership skills by building sisterhood, writing spoken word, and becoming involved in civic engagement for positive change. CIYPM believes that by reinvesting our time, talents, and treasures into young women we can promote peace and nonviolence in our communities. Women of color deserve focused investment.
My Sisters’ Keeper is advocating that resources and funding be focused on girls and women because investments in women benefit the whole community. Many groups and programs focus on black men and boys, leaving women and girls excluded from life-changing opportunities for growth and advancement. Black women, young and old, are the fabric holding households together. Having dedicated programs that target women of color will also have an impact on the men in their communities. Research on development and micro-investment has shown that investments in men usually yield benefits for individual men, but investments in women benefit entire families and communities. Funders could exponentially extend their reach by creating opportunities for black girls.
Jessica Disu, Founder & Executive Director of Chicago International Youth Peace Movement has launched two new programs & projects to promote peace and nonviolence: “Reimagining Peace,” a film/music documentary project and the HerStory mentoring, empowerment and civic engagement group for young women.
