Park Forest, IL-(ENEWSPF)- The Park Forest Fire Department twice assisted Matteson during the week of April 23-29. The PFFD also assisted University Park. Both instances in Matteson involved structure fires, while in University Park, the department assisted at an automobile accident.

There were 79 total responses for that time. There were 24 fire and/or service calls, and 55 EMS calls.

The complete report from the department’s Facebook page follows:

Response Activity

On Friday April 28, crews responded on automatic aid to assist the Matteson Fire Department with a structure fire. Personnel arrived to assist with water supply and fire control in this single family home.

Early in the morning on April 30, crews were dispatched on automatic aid to two different incidents at two different times. The first, a reported structure fire in Matteson, was cancelled by the responding Matteson units. The second was an automobile accident in University Park where a vehicle crashed into a tree and a ditch. No victims were located at this incident and the incident was turned over to the police.

Training Activities

Monday, April 24 thru Wednesday, April 26, career members completed pre-plan training. This training included a site visit, requiring members to identify unique building construction features and fire detection and alarm systems. On Thursday, April 27, shift members trained on physical fitness equipment. This training included the use and care of new equipment.

On Friday evening, April 28, both the career members and POC divisions completed driver’s training. This training included Fire Apparatus Engineering drills.

Fire Prevention Bureau Activities

Fire prevention and public education personnel have been very busy presenting classes and preparing for upcoming presentations.

Last week the Captain spent time with each shift reviewing general fire safety features such as alarm panel locations and sprinkler systems in downtown buildings. The department is going to focus time this upcoming summer to get reacquainted with the downtown.

Public education staff participated in a career day at Illinois school on Thursday morning and on Friday taught safety training for the Library staff on handling emergency situations.

Other Activities

This week the Chief and Deputy Chief both attended the Fire Department Instructors Conference; the largest fire service trade show in the United States. The Deputy Chief started his week out as an instructor for Hands On Training Classes (HOT), something he has participated in for a number of years. Later in the week the Chief joined the D/C at the conference for the educational and trade show offerings. Hundreds of classes are presented at the conference on a wide variety of subjects from rescue to leadership to firefighter skills and training. Towards the end of the week for the trade show itself, FF/Paramedics Taylor Bordewyk, Cory Murdoch and Bess Vlahakis attended and viewed the vehicle, equipment and tool aspect of the conference. Their key point in attending was to begin preparation for the purchase of a replacement ambulance in January of 2018.

The fire department was scheduled to help lead the annual Boys Baseball opening day parade on Saturday; however, due to the overwhelming amount of rain, this activity was postponed to a later date.
