Louisville’s Fischer Joins Mayors for the Freedom to Marry

New York–(ENEWSPF)–June 20, 2014.  In advance of a meeting by the U.S. Conference of Mayors in Dallas, Mayor Greg Fischer of Louisville today joined Mayors for the Freedom to Marry, a broad-based and nonpartisan group of mayors who believe that all people should be able to share in the love and commitment of marriage. Mayor Fischer joins Mayor Bill Sheckles of Bardstown, KY, as the second Kentucky mayor – and more than 400 nationally – to pledge support for the freedom to marry.

“Louisvillians, Kentuckians, and the rest of America, have been on a journey towards support of marriage for same-sex couples,” said Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer. “It is clear to me that discrimination of any form should not be tolerated and that committed gay and lesbian couples deserve the protections that only marriage can provide. I am proud to add my name to Mayors for the Freedom to Marry and pledge my support for fairness and family.”

Mayors for the Freedom to Marry is a project of the national group Freedom to Marry. It includes over 400 mayors from 39 states across America who are making the case for marriage equality in their cities.  The effort is chaired by Kasim Reed of Atlanta; Julián Castro of San Antonio; Michael Nutter of Philadelphia; Annise Parker of Houston; Greg Stanton of Phoenix; Eric Garcetti of Los Angeles; and Republican Mayor Kevin Faulconer of San Diego. Marriage supporters can encourage their own mayors to join Mayors for the Freedom to Marry by sending and asking them to sign the official pledge.

“The values invoked by Mayor Fischer in support of the freedom to marry are the values a strong majority of Americans are embracing all over the country,” said Evan Wolfson, president of Freedom to Marry. “Mayor Fischer, like other mayors, understands that the strength and health of any city are enhanced when all families are protected and supported. It’s time the Supreme Court issuing a national freedom-to-marry ruling.”

Freedom to Marry is the campaign to win marriage nationwide. We are pursuing our Roadmap to Victory by working to win the freedom to marry in more states, grow the national majority for marriage, and end federal marriage discrimination. We partner with individuals and organizations across the country to end the exclusion of same-sex couples from marriage and the protections, responsibilities, and commitment that marriage brings.
