Individuals with Disabilities Organize a Food Drive

Members of Sertoma United, Sertoma’s Self Advocacy Group, Give Back by Donating Food to Together We Cope in Tinley Park, IL.

Alsip–(ENEWSPF)–January 19, 2012. Sertoma United group members recognize that Sertoma Centre, Inc. receives support from the community. The members decided they would like to reciprocate in some way. Last year when the group brainstormed on ideas of how to give back, one member suggested a food drive.  When the holidays were approaching again this year, participants of Sertoma United were happy to reach out to another local area food pantry.  On Friday, January 6th, six members of Sertoma United helped load a van with several boxes of non-perishable items and delivered them to Together We Cope, in Tinley Park, IL.   Pam Williams, self-advocate said, “It made me feel good to help.”

Together We Cope is a not-for-profit organization that serves families and individuals who are going through a crisis. The organization provides clothing, food, financial assistance and guides families in more than 20 communities throughout Bremen, Palos, Orland and Worth townships.  Sertoma United hopes they were able to make a difference in the lives of others and anticipates helping Together We Cope again in the future.  “I wish we had more food to help.” stated Sertoma group member Tanya Crewe.

Committed to giving back, the group members also coordinated a project that involved other individuals within the agency to color holiday cards which were distributed to people serving in the military and patients in nursing homes and children’s hospitals.

The Self-Advocacy program seeks to teach individuals with disabilities at Sertoma Centre skills needed to advocate for their goals and wishes in life. For more information about this program, please contact Lynn King, at 708-730-6352 or [email protected].
