Park Forest, IL—(ENEWSPF)—November 8, 2016. Join The League of Women Voters – Park Forest Area for a panel discussion on Tuesday, November 15 at 7:00 p.m. at the Park Forest Public Library, 400 Lakewood Boulevard. Topics will include the reason for the slow rebound of the local housing market from the national housing recession, the under-lying causes, current programs available to address the problems of distressed homeowners and additional measures needed to stimulate recovery.
Panelists will include John Petruszak, the Executive Director of the South Suburban Housing Center; Geoff Smith, the Executive Director of DePaul University’s Institute for Housing Studies and Robert Sanders, South Suburban Housing Center’s Supervisory Counselor.
Recent media coverage has documented the drop in housing values from the pre-housing market crisis of ten years ago to the present and the high levels of underwater mortgages in the south metropolitan region. South Suburban Housing Center is the regional HUD-approved Counseling and Fair Housing Enforcement Agency servicing the local housing market. They have seen a huge increase in counseling mortgage distressed homeowners after the housing bubble burst. That has not tapered off in this area as it has in other parts of the Chicago metro area.
The panel will conclude with an interactive discussion of possible actions and strategies that could accelerate activity in the local housing market and provide further relief to families adversely impacted by the recession.
