Farm Fresh Market at Governors State University

University Park, IL–(ENEWSPF)– Fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables are coming to Governors State University. The university’s first-ever outdoor farmers market opens for business June 3 on the south end of Parking Lot D on GSU’s University Park campus.

Hours of the farmers market are 1 to 6 p.m., rain or shine, on Thursdays through September.

Jill Stanley, who is serving as market manager, said three vendors – selling produce, organic health and beauty products, and honey – have already signed up for the farmers market. She said other vendors are likely to come on board so that market offerings expand throughout the summer. She expects that it will eventually include flowers and plants, fresh-baked goods, and other items.

“Farmers markets are a good way to raise our consciousness about how we get our food,” said Stanley, Assistant to the Associate and Assistant Provosts at GSU. “While our inaugural year of the farmers market may be small, we’re hoping it blossoms over the years.”

The farmers market is a project of GSU’s SPIRIT Committee, which is looking for ways to increase participation among GSU community members, and in the outside community. Other committee proposals include a community picnic, golf league and tournament, community orchestra, and movies on campus.

Governors State University is located at 1 University Parkway, University Park, Illinois.
