Congresswoman Robin Kelly Urges Eligible Workers to Claim Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) on Tax Returns

Washington, DC–(ENEWSPF)–January 27, 2016.  Congresswoman Robin Kelly today reminds eligible constituents to claim their Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) when filing their tax returns this year. The EITC is a federal tax refund available to millions of low to moderate income individuals and families. The average EITC refund last year was approximately $2,200. Eligible people may qualify for a refund even if they owe no taxes.

“EITC provides a financial lift to working families at a time when the middle class is still struggling to regain its fiscal footing,” Congresswoman Robin Kelly said. “I encourage my constituents to learn more about the EITC and other important refundable tax credits, including the Premium Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit and American Opportunity Tax Credit.”

The IRS estimates that up to 25 percent of eligible taxpayers nationwide neglect to claim the credit because they are unaware it exists. Workers who earned $49,078 or less from wages, self- employment or farm income last year could receive larger refunds if they qualify. That translates to $464 in EITC for individuals without children, and a maximum credit of up to $5,751 for families with three or more children.

You can determine if you qualify by answering a few questions using the EITC Assistant.

EITC-eligible workers may also qualify for free tax preparation at more than 12,000 Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites, and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) sites. For a location nearest you, call the IRS at 1-800-906-9887 or visit www.irs.gov.
