CRETE—(ENEWSPF)–June 12, 2012. The Crete Village Board on Monday unanimously voted to withdraw the community from consideration for a federal immigration detention center. The vote followed months of organized opposition to the proposed site.
Community members began a grassroots movement opposing the plan last December. A petition drive resulted in more than 1,500 signatures opposing the site. Those opposing the center claimed it would decrease property values and pose a potential security threat.
