CHICAGO –(ENEWSPF)–July 8, 2016. Congresswoman Robin Kelly (D-IL) issued the following statement today in response to the tragic shooting events that have taken place this week in Texas, Minnesota and Louisiana:
“Like all Americans, the tragic events of the last few days have been difficult for me to absorb. My heart goes out to the police officers in Dallas who gave their lives in defense of the right of peaceful protest – even when that protest was against police misconduct. They are the best of this nation. My heart also goes out to the families of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, whose deaths unfortunately represent the worst of this nation.
These tragedies are hard to reconcile. I come from a family of cops so my admiration for law enforcement runs deep. So does the concern and fear I hold as a mother of a black son who feels like it’s open season on him in America. We have to find the balance where there is respect for life on both sides. We must find common ground in a greater understanding of our shared stakes in creating a fairer, safer society for us all.”
