WASHINGTON –(ENEWSPF)–July 10, 2015. Congresswoman Robin Kelly issued the following statement today on House Democratic efforts to have the Confederate flag removed from the U.S. Capitol:
“Today, South Carolina took an important step forward in healing America’s racial wounds by removing the Confederate flag from their statehouse grounds. It is historical fact that the Confederate States of America –and their battle flag – only sought to divide America. In 1865, General Robert E. Lee surrendered to General Ulysses S. Grant, ending the Civil War and preserving our Union. Still, yesterday, Congress failed to recognize what General Lee realized 150 years ago – that as a divided nation we cannot prosper.
I am disappointed that House Republicans refused to take action on a Democratic effort to move on from this hateful history by stalling a resolution to remove state flags containing images of the Confederate battle flag from the Capitol. It is unacceptable that representatives of our union would defend this symbol of hatred.
The Confederate flag has no place on any federal grounds. To allow that flag to hang in the Capitol dishonors the union and the millions of Americans who died for the American flag. It also dishonors the untold others who were shackled, treated as 3/5ths of a person, ripped from their families, lynched, hosed, denied an education, and treated unequally under the banner of the Confederate flag.
Congress must act now to remove the flag from the Capitol and from all federal land.”
