Congresswoman Robin Kelly, vice chair of the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, released this statement following President Trump’s decision to exclude Chicago’s and Illinois’ elected officials from his “discussion” of Chicago, which will be hosted in New Jersey – 768 miles away:
“I’m starting to sound like a broken record, but once again, this President’s actions are ridiculous.
His decision to sit comfortably at his New Jersey resort and have a Chicago safety summit – while excluding actual Chicagoans and Illinois officials – is a slap in the face of Illinois families. The President is clearly more interested useless lip service and political posturing than saving American lives from gun violence.
Once again, my invitation to President Trump stands. If he wants to be part of the solution, he must come to Chicago and speak with the families who’ve lost loved ones.
Mr. President, work with Congress and our communities to invest in our communities and pass gun safety legislation.”
Absurd! A meeting hosted 768 miles away w/out Chicago or Illinois officials will be less than useless. My invite stands: come to Chicago, speak w/ families who’ve lost kids & those working to stop the violence. Be part of the solution. #twill https://t.co/0y5z1ec8Ze
