Congresswoman Robin Kelly announced today that the Homewood Fire Department was awarded a $58,210 federal grant that will go toward fire station safety improvements and officer training.

“Approximately $52,000 of these funds will be used to update our station’s exhaust removal system to ensure the health and well-being of our personnel,” said Homewood Fire Chief Bob Grabowski. “The additional $6,000 will be used for fire officer development training.”

The grant was awarded through the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency in cooperation with the U.S. Fire Administration.

“As a public official who has served at the local level, I understand the importance of acquiring federal funding to keep municipalities operating safety and smoothly. That’s why I recently hosted a grants workshop to inform municipal leaders about government funding opportunities available for local projects. The Homewood Fire Department has been proactive in securing available funds to protect the health and safety of its first responders,” Congresswoman Kelly said.

The purpose of the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program, is to strengthen the nation’s overall level of preparedness and ability to respond to fire and related hazards. Since 2001, the AFG Program has provided approximately $7.1 billion in grants to first-responder organizations to obtain much-needed emergency response equipment, personal protective equipment, as well as firefighting and emergency vehicles and training.
