Congresswoman Duckworth: Silent Skies Act Would Help Reduce O’Hare Noise Pollution

Washington, DC–(ENEWSPF)–December 21, 2015.  Continuing her efforts to improve quality of life and reduce noise pollution in communities surrounding airports like O’Hare, Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth (IL-08), Ranking Member of the House Oversight and Government Reform Subcommittee on Transportation and Public Assets, recently cosponsored the Silent Skies Act. The legislation, which was introduced by Rep. Joe Crowley (NY-14), would help expedite the development of technologies to reduce airplane noise encourage commercial airplanes to meet quieter noise standards and suggest airlines modernize their fleets by replacing loud, aging aircraft with new, quieter planes.

“The citizens of the Eighth District, including many of my neighbors, know firsthand the negative impact O’Hare noise pollution can have on their quality of life,” said Duckworth, a Member of the Quiet Skies Caucus.“It is crucial we work together at every level of government—local, state and federal—to address this problem and find real solutions. The Silent Skies Act will help make airplanes quieter and improve the lives of those living near airports, and I am glad to support it.”

In addition to cosponsoring the Silent Skies Act, Congresswoman Duckworth has worked closely with local leaders, community stakeholders, and federal officials since arriving in Congress to ensure the concerns of those affected by O’Hare-related noise pollution are adequately addressed. She has fought to support the Fly Quiet Program, asked the FAA to re-examine its environmental impact study for the O’Hare modernization project and worked to revise and simplify the process for residents to file noise complaints regarding air traffic. Congresswoman Duckworth has also pushed for an updated FAA Day-Night Average Sound Level (DNL) designation that could reduce the impact of aircraft noise in homes by helping more Eighth District residents qualify for assistance acquiring sound insulation.
