In the week ending December 3, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 381,000, a decrease of 23,000 from the previous week’s revised figure of 404,000. The 4-week moving average was 393,250, a decrease of 3,000 from the previous week’s revised average of 396,250.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.8 percent for the week ending November 26, a decrease of 0.2 percentage point from the prior week’s unrevised rate.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending November 26 was 3,583,000, a decrease of 174,000 from the preceding week’s revised level of 3,757,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,667,250, a decrease of 20,500 from the preceding week’s revised average of 3,687,750.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 523,642 in the week ending December 3, an increase of 151,002 from the previous week. There were 585,711 initial claims in the comparable week in 2010.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.9 percent during the week ending November 26, an increase of 0.4 percentage points from the prior week’s unrevised rate. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,679,992, an increase of 512,961 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 3.4 percent and the volume was 4,216,488.
The total number of people claiming benefits in all programs for the week ending November 19 was 6,574,837, a decrease of 431,307 from the previous week.
Extended benefits were available in Alabama, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, West Virginia, and Wisconsin during the week ending November 19.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 2,003 in the week ending November 26, a decrease of 294 from the prior week. There were 1,808 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 959 from the preceding week.
There were 27,703 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending November 19, a decrease of 2,137 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 38,628, a decrease of 4,411 from the prior week.
States reported 2,794,284 persons claiming EUC (Emergency Unemployment Compensation) benefits for the week ending November 19, a decrease of 178,610 from the prior week. There were 3,711,136 claimants in the comparable week in 2010. EUC weekly claims include first, second, third, and fourth tier activity.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending November 19 were in Alaska (5.6), Puerto Rico (4.7), Oregon (3.8), Pennsylvania (3.5), Connecticut (3.3), Nevada (3.3), New Jersey (3.3), Arkansas (3.2), Idaho (3.1), and Rhode Island (3.1).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending November 26 were in Wisconsin (+8,172), Michigan ( (+2,643), Iowa (+2,228), Indiana (+1,645), and Ohio (+1,500) while the largest decreases were in California (-27,440), Texas (-8,543), Florida (-5,306), South Carolina (-4,670), and New York (-4,614).
