UN Envoy Condemns Assassination of Somalia’s Interior Minister

NEW YORK–(ENEWSPF)–11 June 2011.  The United Nations envoy for Somalia today expressed shock over the assassination of the country’s Interior Minister and condemned the murder, saying that the violent minority must not be allowed to torpedo the peace process.

The minister, Abdishakur Sheik Hassan Farah, who also held the national security portfolio, was killed in an apparent suicide attack in his home in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, yesterday.

“This attack must be condemned by all those who want to see Somalia back on track to peace and security,” said Augustine Mahiga, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Somalia “The violent minority who carry out such vicious attacks must not be allowed to disrupt the ongoing peace process.”

Dr. Mahiga conveyed his deep condolences to the bereaved family and to the Transitional Federal Government and wished all those injured in the attack quick recovery.

The United Nations is striving to help Somalia restore peace and stability after more two decades of lawlessness and factional warfare that has dogged the country since the collapse in 1991 of the administration led by the late Muhammad Siad Barre.
