Purdue University Police Confirm 1 Fatality, 1 in Custody Following Campus Shooting


WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind.–(ENEWSPF)–January 21, 2014.  Purdue University officials confirmed that one man was fatally shot and one suspect was taken into custody following a shooting that occurred on campus around noon Tuesday (Jan. 21).

“Our police reacted quickly, and the university alert notification system was activated immediately,” said Tim Sands, Purdue’s provost. “Our primary concern was to secure the building and make sure students were safe.”

Sands said classes have been suspended for the remainder of Tuesday (Jan. 21) and all day Wednesday (Jan. 22).

“As a parent of Purdue students myself, I want to let parents know we will do everything possible to make sure counseling services are available and that we will do everything possible to support our students, faculty and staff during this difficult time.”

Sands said a candlelight vigil has been scheduled for 8 p.m. Tuesday (Jan. 21) between Hovde Hall and the Engineering Fountain.

Purdue Police chief John Cox said a male who was suspected in the fatal shooting was taken into police custody. Identities of the victim and suspect were not immediately available.

Cox said additional suspects were not being sought in the shooting and police believe the suspect intentionally targeted the victim.

Cox said officers arrived on the scene within minutes and secured the building. Officers from the Lafayette and West Lafayette police departments and Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Department also responded.

The shooting, which occurred in the basement area of the Electrical Engineering Building, was reported at 12:03 p.m., and text alerts were issued immediately to campus.

The gunmen was in custody within minutes of arriving at the scene, however, the Electrical Engineering Building remained closed as police continued the investigation. A shelter-in-place for the remainder of campus was lifted about 1:15 p.m.

Counselors will be available to talk with students, faculty and staff from 9-10:30 p.m. Tuesday (Jan 21). They will be located in the resident assistants’ resource room in the south towers of Cary Quadrangle, the Tarkington West activity room, Shreve Hall Jade Room, and Purdue Village community center. Counseling also is available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday through the Dean of Students Office, 207 Schleman Hall, phone 765-494-1747, and through Purdue Health Center’s counseling and psychological services. The health center also has an after-hours number available from 5-8 p.m., 765-494-1724.
