MALI–(ENEWSPF)–20 November 2015 – The top United Nations official in Mali today condemned the terrorist attack on a hotel in the country’s capital, Bamako.

In a statement, Mongi Hamdi, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the UN Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA), expressed his support to those affected by the attack.

The Mission said it is currently supporting Malian authorities and is providing security back-up while also deploying medical resources at the site.

According to media reports, Malian special forces have entered the hotel and are working to free over 130 hostages. United States and French special forces are reportedly assisting.

Mali has been riven by conflict since a military coup d’état in 2012, resulting in very large scale internal and external displacement in the region.
