Hillary Clinton Applauds Expected Executive Action by President Obama on Gun Safety, Warns GOP Would ‘Delight’ in Reversing it

NEW HAMPSHIRE—(ENEWSPF)—January 4, 2016. Hillary Clinton, who is campaigning in New Hampshire, today applauded President Obama’s soon-to-be-announced executive action that would strengthen background checks and make it harder for dealers to sell guns to criminals. But Clinton warned how the progress made by this executive order would be reversed if a Republican wins the White House. Republican candidates including Donald TrumpMarco RubioChris Christie and Ted Cruz have already announced their intention to undo this action curbing gun violence.

“When I came out with my proposals for common sense gun safety measures, I did say that in the absence of Congressional action, I would use executive authority to go as far as would be possible under the law and I applaud the President for taking a hard look at that and I believe he will take some actions to require more gun sellers to do background checks,” Clinton said of the anticipated proposal.

Clinton warned: “I know that a Republican president would delight in the very first day, reversing executive orders that President Obama has made, including this one that we expect him to make.”

Clinton first addressed President Obama’s executive action at an event in Derry, and she will do so again later today in Keene.  In Keene, Clinton will be introduced by former Congressman Dick Swett who voted for the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act when he was in Congress and was subsequently targeted by the NRA for defeat in 1994.

Throughout this campaign and her career, Clinton has stood up to the gun lobby. She has called for additional steps to strengthen background checks including comprehensive federal background check legislation that closes the “Charleston Loophole.” She would repeal the gun industry’s immunity protection for irresponsible gun manufacturers and dealers and expand protections to keep hands out of domestic abusers, the severely mentally ill and suspected terrorists. Her plan is available here.
