Senators Reach Deal to Delay Kavanaugh Floor Vote That Includes FBI Investigation

Key swing votes opposed to moving nomination otherwise

It is being reported that Senators have reached an agreement to delay a planned floor vote on Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. The agreement allows for an FBI investigation of allegations of sexual misconduct against him for a period. The delay will last up to one week.

The agreement came after Kavanaugh’s nomination was approved in the Senate Judiciary Committee on an 11-10 vote. However Senator Jeff Flake (R-Arizona) insisted that he would not be comfortable with moving forward on the floor until another investigation had concluded. He was joined in this demand by Senators Lisa Murkowksi (R-Alaska), and Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) III who are considered to be key swing votes on the nomination.

This latest call by Flake is believed to have been made in part due to the enormous public out-cry directed at him for not having the courage to vote against moving the nomination out of the Senate Judiciary Committee especially since he is not running for re-election. As a result GOP leaders were left with little choice but to agree to a delay until another background check could be completed.
