Unemployment Insurance Weekly Claims Report for Week Ending November 26, 2016

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending November 26, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 268,000, an increase of 17,000 from the previous week’s unrevised level of 251,000. The 4-week moving average was 251,500, an increase of 500 from the previous week’s unrevised average of 251,000.

There were no special factors impacting this week’s initial claims. This marks 91 consecutive weeks of initial claims below 300,000, the longest streak since 1970.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.5 percent for the week ending November 19, unchanged from the previous week’s unrevised rate. The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending November 19 was 2,081,000, an increase of 38,000 from the previous week’s unrevised level of 2,043,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,037,500, an increase of 12,750 from the previous week’s unrevised average of 2,024,750.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 250,377 in the week ending November 26, a decrease of 37,417 (or -13.0 percent) from the previous week. The seasonal factors had expected a decrease of 53,286 (or -18.5 percent) from the previous week. There were 262,628 initial claims in the comparable week in 2015.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.3 percent during the week ending November 19, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 1,744,272, a decrease of 112,962 (or -6.1 percent) from the preceding week. The seasonal factors had expected a decrease of 145,064 (or -7.8 percent) from the previous week. A year earlier the rate was 1.4 percent and the volume was 1,891,197.

The total number of people claiming benefits in all programs for the week ending November 12 was 1,903,834, an increase of 123,175 from the previous week. There were 2,059,228 persons claiming benefits in all programs in the comparable week in 2015.

No state was triggered “on” the Extended Benefits program during the week ending November 12.

Initial claims for UI benefits filed by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,787 in the week ending November 19, an increase of 760 from the prior week. There were 989 initial claims filed by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 136 from the preceding week.

There were 14,576 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending November 12, an increase of 3,526 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 13,319, an increase of 558 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending November 12 were in Alaska (3.9), Puerto Rico (2.6), the Virgin Islands (2.6), New Jersey (2.4), California (2.2), Connecticut (2.1), Pennsylvania (2.0), Wyoming (1.9), and Nevada (1.8).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending November 19 were in California (+14,214), Illinois (+5,581), Pennsylvania (+3,612), Missouri (+3,178), and Texas (+2,736), while the largest decreases were in Tennessee (-122), and Rhode Island (-64).
